How It Got Started

Growing up, I always had a love for watching the news every morning before going to school. I remember at the age of six, I would get out of the shower and start drying my hair with a blowdryer and pretend it’s the wind, and my hairbrush was the microphone. From then on, my mom would always tell me that I was a little news reporter. We all grow up wanting to become someone, someone who will succeed all the way through on whichever path they choose. You must love, in order to do.

So to begin, I discovered this career back in Elementary school. In fact, I thought of it more as a hobby.  Each morning, I would eat breakfast and my mother would turn on Good Day LA on channel 11.”I want to be just like them” I would say.  Both of my parents supported me at that age and said I would make it if I stick to it. Attending public schools, and meeting such amazing people made a big influence on choosing my career. I was a part of a small Journalism class in 5th grade where we had a column called “Kids Speak.” Writing articles that then became published made me very excited as a kid. One of my many hobbies have always been writing, until this day it is one of my favorite things to do. Watching the news every morning has been a big impact. Just by listening to the reporters speak, and having the ability to put myself in their shoes made me realize that I will do whatever it takes to achieve my goal.

I continued my writing in High School. Each month we had a newspaper come out, so in general, I had written about fourteen articles in nine months for each month’s paper, including online. There has been a lot of development going on lately in my career, which has uplifted and evolved my knowledge more than it ever had been. My love for Journalism grew even more once I began Los Angeles Community College. Going to community college was the greatest thing I did. It prepared me for CSUN, which I am truly thankful for. During my last year, I was the Newscaster for our page on Facebook called “Collegian Wired.” Each week, I would write my own script regarding the news of the week and talk on camera in our studio, having it then be posted on the page for students to be aware of.

Going out into the real world and interviewing people at school and events opened my eyes. I was also the Opinions and Editorial Editor, which was one of the biggest reasons why I grew more in the field. Quick movement and thinking  were required, and with the help of my wonderful Professor Guess, I aced it. It was my responsibility to make sure every reporter’s work was accurate and submitted on time, and interviews were done. Once everyone’s work was complete, each editor would send their section to the graphic designer of the paper.

Most of my work was recognized throughout the campus. My professor of three years supported me all the way. She saw the passion in my eyes and in my work, which made it difficult for me to leave LACC. I can still recall her advice and voice. Social Media has helped me in many ways towards my career as well. I have gotten in contact with many Broadcasters from Fox 11 and KTLA5 News such as Araksya Karapetyan, Ellina Abovian, Cher Calvin, and Vera Jimenez. Getting in touch with people in this field has been a big help as I heard about their stories and hardships as journalists. My Journalism class also provided us the opportunity to make a visit to the KTLA studio. We were able to watch the news anchors broadcast live and get a tour of the studio, as well as get advice.
